Dyscalculia affects 3 - 6% (British Dyslexia Association)
Just as dyslexia affects adults in the workplace....so does dyscalculia.
Difficulties with number can be caused by incomplete or disrupted education or by dyscalculia which is 'genetically predisposed' (carried in the genes).
The challenges these individuals face can vary - ranging from those who have difficulties with simple arithmetical tasks to those who may be very 'able' in respect of number work however they may have extreme difficulty remembering how to actually carry out the process. (For example someone qualified in book-keeping who struggles to remember what to do at each month end or a manager struggling to pull together info on staff time-sheets and submitting totals for payroll).
Specialist one to one coaching can help individuals feel more in control of their workload and reduce stress which may be related to these types of challenges.
The underlying challenges of dyslexia as shown in the Dyslexia Iceberg are the same challenges underlying dyscalculia.
